Grand Jury Indicts Fund-Raiser for Democrats

A federal grand jury charged Hassan Nemazee, a New York businessman who has ties to prominent politicians, with defrauding banks of $292 million in part to benefit the Democratic Party.

Mr. Nemazee, 59 years old, used the proceeds of his scheme to donate to campaigns and political-action committees, according to an indictment made public Monday, though the amount allegedly spent on these efforts wasn't specified. The donations helped him rise to become finance chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, among other major roles.

A spokesman for the Democratic National Committee said the DNC, Obama for America, and the Presidential Inaugural Committee, which organized President Barack Obama's inaugural festivities, would donate to charity $61,700 of contributions Mr. Nemazee made during the 2008-09 election cycle.

Obama Said to Request That Paterson Drop Campaign

WASHINGTON — President Obama has sent a request to Gov. David A. Paterson that he withdraw from the New York governor’s race, fearing that Mr. Paterson cannot recover from his dismal political standing, according to two senior administration officials and a New York Democratic operative with direct knowledge of the situation.

The decision to ask Mr. Paterson to step aside was proposed by political advisers to Mr. Obama, but approved by the president himself, one of the administration officials said.

“Is there concern about the situation in New York? Absolutely,” the second administration official said Saturday evening. “Has that concern been conveyed to the governor? Yes.”

The administration officials and the Democratic operative spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions with the governor were intended to be confidential.

The president’s request was conveyed to the Mr. Paterson by Representative Gregory W. Meeks, a Queens Democrat, who has developed a strong relationship with the Obama administration, they said.

The move against a sitting Democratic governor represents an extraordinary intervention into a state political race by the president, and is a delicate one, given that Mr. Paterson is one of only two African-American governors in the nation.

But Mr. Obama’s political team and other party leaders have grown increasingly worried that the governor’s unpopularity could drag down Democratic members of Congress in New York, as well as the Democratic-controlled Legislature, in next fall’s election.

Mr. Paterson and his aides did not respond to repeated requests for comment Saturday. Mr. Paterson arrived on Long Island Saturday evening to attend a dinner, but walked hurriedly past a reporter who tried to ask him about the White House request.

An aide to Mr. Meeks said the congressman could not be reached Saturday.

“The message the White House wanted to send — that it wants Paterson to step aside — was delivered,” said the Democratic operative,, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions were intended to be confidential. “He is resistant.”

The general election is more than a year away, but Mr. Obama and his political team are moving now in part because of signals from Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former New York City mayor, that he may run for governor, according to Democrats who have spoken with White House officials. Many Democratic leaders believe that Mr. Giuliani’s presence at the top of the Republican ticket could spark enthusiasm among his party’s voters, who might otherwise have little desire to go to the polls.

This summer, the 47-year-old held court at a wine-and-music festival he helped found in Cortona, Italy, with a group of high-society friends. There, he interviewed film star Anthony Hopkins, and oversaw a program of cheese tasting, tai chi classes and violin performances.

James Davis, the former chief financial officer of Stanford Financial Group, the firm run by alleged swindler Allen Stanford, has pleaded guilty to fraud and is "cooperating like crazy" with authorities, said his lawyer, David Finn. Douglas Faneuil, an assistant to Martha Stewart's stock broker whose testimony played a big role in her 2004 conspiracy conviction, hid in a Manhattan hotel for several weeks to avoid publicity, according to his lawyer, Marc Powers of Baker Hostetler. "We got calls from media every other day, but we declined them all," Mr. Powers said. "I told him he had to keep a low profile."

William Brewer, Mr. Wissman's lawyer, said his client's life in Dallas is pretty simple. Since resigning from his investment firm and his IMG post, he plays piano, looks after his infant son, exercises and helps authorities prepare their case against those accused of corrupting New York state's employee-pension fund. Mr. Brewer emphasized his client has admitted wrongdoing and is now cooperating.

Even the Tuscan meal -- the fine Merlot with Chianina beef, mozzarella cheese, lettuce and tomato -- he enjoyed with the Wine Spectator columnist wasn't meant to be fancy, according to the attorney. "He thought he was going to be having a hamburger," Mr. Brewer said.

Mr. Wissman pleaded guilty to assisting political adviser Hank Morris to collect more than $15 million in sham finders fees from investment firms seeking New York pension money. Mr. Wissman himself is charged by the state attorney general to have made $12 million in illegal kickbacks, which he said he would pay back over three years. While he has yet to face sentencing, securities attorneys said Mr. Wissman is unlikely to face prison time because of his cooperation.
