Senator Chuck Schumer still has a majority of New York voters -- 51% -- who think he is doing either an excellent or good job in office. When Marist last asked about Schumer’s approval rating in November, the proportion stood at 54%. Schumer’s approval rating has been on a decline since mid-September. In that Marist survey, 58% of voters gave the senator high marks.

BEIJING — Google said Tuesday that it would stop cooperating with Chinese Internet censorship and consider shutting down its operations in the country altogether, citing assaults from hackers on its computer systems and China’s attempts to “limit free speech on the Web.”
The move, if followed through, would be a highly unusual rebuke of China by one of the largest and most admired technology companies, which had for years coveted China’s 300 million Web users
Since arriving here in 2006 under an arrangement with the government that purged its Chinese search results of banned topics, Google has come under fire for abetting a system that increasingly restricts what citizens can read online.
Google linked its decision to sophisticated cyberattacks on its computer systems that it suspected originated in China and that were aimed, at least in part, at the Gmail user accounts of Chinese human rights activists.

Obama owes New York: Feds must pay every security penny for foolish terror trial

The utter madness of the Obama administration's decision to try the architects of 9/11 in Manhattan has risen to roughly $200 million per year in security costs - per year, per year, per year.
Based on the NYPD's latest projection, the taxpayers could be out of pocket at least, oh, say, half a billion dollars to pay the expenses entailed in clamping a longstanding defensive perimeter around the federal courthouse.
The cost would be both necessary and insane. What we have here are a half-billion more reasons why President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder must abandon their plan to put Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and four Al Qaeda coconspiritors center stage here.
Obama and Holder have said they are out to show that the U.S. can grant full legal rights to worst-of-the-worst terrorists in civilian courts without jeopardizing the war on terror or public safety. Can they really do that? No way. No how.
The Police Department's $200 million-a-year plan represents nothing so much as an effort to buy down an extremely high risk with heroic measures. But no amount of money will purchase freedom from all threat when danger is so substantial.
Stunningly, Holder did not consult, or forewarn, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly before ordering that Mohammed should be shipped to lower Manhattan. Since no formal action has yet been taken, Obama still has the chance to countermand the order. Failing such a step, the President must pay the full freight.
Sen. Chuck Schumer has begun to push the administration to write a line into the federal budget that would formally appropriate the full couple of hundred million dollars needed for Mohammed's first year of residence in New York. Schumer is right to do so because it is time for Obama to, at least, put federal money where his rhetoric is.
With the NYPD already understaffed by thousands of officers and with more than 1,000 cops deployed to anti-terror duty daily - at a cost of $300 million annually - the department would be forced to staff trial security largely on overtime.
There is simply no reserve force ready to step in, nor can New York taxpayers fairly be asked to shoulder a national obligation born of Obama's wrongheaded obsession with closing the Guantanamo detention center. (Some of whose alumni are leading the Al Qaeda branch that tried to bring down Northwest Flight 253.)
