Assemblyman’s Chief of Staff Is Arrested in Bribery Case

The chief of staff to William F. Boyland Jr., an assemblyman arrested this week on charges of soliciting and accepting thousands of dollars in bribes from undercover federal agents posing as eager businessmen, was arrested on Thursday in connection with the alleged scheme.

Ry-Ann Hermon, 33, Mr. Boyland’s chief of staff since 2008, was charged in Federal District Court in Brooklynwith accepting bribes from the same federal agents who were dealing with Mr. Boyland, according to prosecutors. And according to the complaint, some of Ms. Hermon’s overtures were remarkably transparent.

Following are excerpts from the criminal complaint against Ry-Ann Hermon, the chief of staff to Assemblyman William F. Boyland Jr., in which Ms. Hermon is recorded asking a cooperating witness about money. A few days later, another conversation was recorded between Ms. Hermon and an undercover federal agent.

Ms. Hermon: We are not making any money. Are we getting some money for this?

Witness: Oh, absolutely.

Ms. Hermon: Are we getting money or are you giving it to my boss? ... If you give it to our boss, we are not getting it so ——

Witness: O.K., listen, the organization gets it ——

Ms. Hermon: We are not getting it then.
